Which New Cars Sold the Best in October?

A supply shortage has resulted in an overall decreased sale of new vehicles across November, but a total of 74,650 new cars managed to find a home within the spookiest month of the year. This is approximately 8% lower than the same month in 2020.

According to Dom Tripolone over on News Australia, the drop in sales is attributed to a shortage of semiconductors which are an integral part in the creation of new vehicles. That said, the market is on track to top a million sales in 2021. In 2020, sales were horrifically under a million for the first time since 2009.

It should not come as a surprise that Toyota was the best selling car maker across Australia, though the shortages in production overseas resulted in roughly 4000 fewer vehicles being sold in October this year than the same period in 2020. Some of their most popular vehicles including the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and the LandCruiser 70-Series have long wait lists sitting at six months or more.

Overall, the best selling vehicle was the Ranger Ute by Ford, which sold 4135 units. Toyota HiLux was second with 3961 and the Toyota LandCruiser 4WD was third with 2031. Here is the list of the top 10 in order from highest to the lowest:

  1. Ford Ranger - 4135
  2. Toyota HiLux - 3961
  3. Toyota LandCruiser - 2031
  4. Toyota Corolla - 1989
  5. Hyundai i30 - 1946
  6. Isuzu D-Max - 1694
  7. Toyota RAV4 - 1670
  8. Hyundai Tucson - 1532
  9. Mitsubishi ASX - 1464
  10. Nissan X-Trail - 1420

Additionally, the top 10 selling brands in October are as follows:

  1. Toyota - 15,395
  2. Hyundai - 6115
  3. Ford - 5462
  4. Mazda - 5181
  5. Kia - 4853
  6. Mitsubishi - 4203
  7. Nissan - 3397
  8. MG - 3136
  9. Volkswagen - 2912
  10. Subaru - 2736

One of the most surprising aspects of the month was the sale rate of electric cars. Throughout the month, electric cars have risen almost 150%. That said, it only amounts to 461 vehicles, excluding Tesla vehicles sold as those numbers are not reported on publicly.
