What Variable Valve Timing Solenoids Do
Variable valve timing or "VVT" is one of the most common engine technologies found in modern vehicles. Adjusting the timing of the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves, VVT is particularly useful in helping smaller vehicles produce more power when under heavier loads or travelling at greater speeds. Variable valve timing is controlled by a chain and gear system that engages when your engine reaches a certain speed of operation, and this chain is lubricated by your vehicle's engine oil in order to ensure the smoothest operation and prevent any damage caused by heat or friction.
The VVT solenoid is responsible for this flow of oil, switching on and off when the variable valve timing system engages and disengages respectively. When it's switched on, a flow of oil is sent to the chain and gear, and when it switches off, so does the oil. This makes the VVT incredibly important in helping your vehicle perform at high speeds and keeping it protected under heavy loads, and a failed VVT solenoid can lead to a complete shutdown of your variable valve timing system altogether.
