Muddled Beginnings
Nissan began its life as the Kwaishinsha Motor Car works, producing their first car – named the DAT – in 1914. After merging with another auto manufacturer in the mid 20s, they began production of a smaller successor to the DAT, the Datsun. This began Nissan’s long history of producing outstanding compact vehicles.
Moving to larger scale manufacturing in the industrial city of Yokohama over the next 10 years, Kwaishinsha (at that time named DAT Jisoka Seizo following the aforementioned merger) finally gained its modern name after it was merged once more, this time with the already existing Nissan Holding Company. Henceforth, the Nissan Motor Co. was born. At this point, Nissan began to slowly expand globally, exporting Datsuns in a gradually increasing scale across Asia, Central America and South America.
100 Days that Had a Lasting Impact
A major turning in point in Nissans history was perhaps the time of it’s lowest productivity. For 100 days in 1953 shortly following the Korean War, workers (backed by a militant union after the events of the Korean War) downed tools at their production plant after wage negotiations began with their struggling employer. The strike was defeated 100 days later, and the new union contract that followed prioritised productivity above all. This fostered in a new wave of technological advancement that ironically helped shape Nissan into the global power it became over the next 30 years.
Following the strike, Nissan began to grow exponentially both locally and overseas. After slowly making themselves known in both the Australian and American markets, they began to export Datsuns into both countries throughout the 60s and early 70s, looking to fulfil their respective demands for compact, stylish cars. Events like the 1973 oil crisis saw vehicles like the Datsun 240z gain tremendous success in western countries throughout the early 70s, while locally Nissan also grew by incorporating the Prince Motor Company (and subsequently, the now-famous Skyline) into it’s ranks. By the 1980s, companies like Nissan, Honda and Toyota had begun manufacturing cars in both Europe and the United states, and were true forces in the global car market.
Forming Global Ties
Since the 1980’s and leading up until today, Nissan (now co-owned by French carmaker Renault) has grown through good times and bad to become the 4th largest vehicle manufacturer in the world. Nissan also enjoyed fruitful partnerships producing cars under license for the likes of Ford, GM and Volkswagen.
Nissan has always prioritised making a significant impact in the Australian market, and the people down under have responded by embracing Nissan as one of it’s most popular source of vehicles for all drivers. As such, a wealth of outstanding parts and spares exists across their entire product range, making finding the perfect components for your Nissan easier than ever if you shop online through Spares Box.
